Trail. In addition, the projects would promote groundwater recharge and infiltration and to a
small degree, reduce sediment/nutrient loading of the storm water pond south of 170th Trail NW.
Both the prairie establishment and the rain garden would result in new pollinator habitat, which
is being rapidly depleted across the state and nation. Both also generally promote sustainable
landscapes and once fully established, will reduce necessary maintenance inputs compared to
more traditional landscapes (turf grass). Finally, as mentioned, the tree planting event could be an
Arbor Day event — conceivably with an invite for the neighbors to participate in with the EPB,
and the Park and Recreation Commission in May of 2016 (also an element of public
engagement).
Parks & Assistant Public Works Superintendent Mark Riverblood reviewed the recommended
funding sources for this project. Staff recommends proceeding with these three (3) interrelated
project elements (native landscape, rain garden and tree planting). No action is required on the
part of the Parks and Recreation Commission. The Public Works Committee recommended the
City Council authorize staff to proceed with the Brookfield Rain garden and trail connection
based upon the work plan and budget presented.
The following documents were provided for Commission review:
Arbor Day invite letter
Brookfield location map
Street view
Planting plan and specs
Rain garden plan and specs
Typical prairie
Example planting
EPB Minutes
Commissioner Troy asked about the elevation change and Mr. Riverblood stated it will meet
ADA but not in this particular point. Typically, the maximum grade is 5% or drop of 20 feet.
This is similar to the trail at Itasca Park.
Commissioner Trappen asked how deep the rain garden would be and Mr. Riverblood stated 18-
24 inches deep. He indicated the location of the future rain garden.
6. COMMISSION/STAFF INPUT
Mr. Riverblood reviewed the following:
11211 Reunion Ride (on the Mississippi River Trail, Saturday May 14, 2016) — 8:30 a.m. —
Meet and Greet; 9:00 a.m. — Depart for the Trail. Start and End at Boom Island Brewing 2014
Washington Avenue N. (Washington and Broadway) Minneapolis — Street Parking Available.
$40 Registration fee.
11211 MRT (July 2016) — The same 3-day ride from Lake Itasca to the Iowa border will be held.
It will be July 16, 2016.
Park and Recreation Commission/May 12, 2016
Page 3 of 4
