City of Ramsey

15153 NOWTHEN BOULEVARD N.W., RAMSEY, MINNESOTA 65303 · (612) 427-1410

,Sanuary 14, 1987

· he Honorable Gene Nerri~
l~d~esota Senate
122 Capitol
b~c. Paul, 1~1 55155

Dear Senator Metric:

· ae P~msey Eoonc~ic Pevelopaent C~ission is very concerned with
the i~pact of the state's commercial and industrial property tax
rates on the business climate in Plinnesota.

As you probably knc~, ~al!/m~di~ businesses are the basis of the
local and state economy. These businesses also provide the
majority of employment opportunities in the state. Due to the
state's property tax structure, these businesses are burdened
with a disproportionate share of property taxes compared to
residential property ~ers.

In addition, the taxes on unimproved platted commercial or
industrial land are also prohibitively high. The state should
enoourage the platting of raw commercial and industrial land to
all~ for orderly development. However, the tax burden on such
property if the lots are not improved (developed) almost
immediately is far too high.

We feel that major reform of the state's property tax system is
imperative, especially those taxes on commercial and industrial
properties. This issue must be addressed this legislative
session if the economic viability of the state is to be
preserved.

Thank you for your time, ~onsideration and action on this issue.

Yours truly,
Donald Oreenberg' ~/ ' '
