Public Works Committee 6. 1.
Meeting Date: 07/19/2016
By: Bruce Westby,Engineering/Public
Works
Title:
Review 2016 Temporary COR Concrete Pavement Repairs
Purpose/Background:
Purpose:
The purpose of this case is to review the temporary repairs proposed for the concrete streets within The COR.
Background:
In 2004 approximately 4,000 linear feet of public streets were constructed of concrete pavement in The COR.
Concrete pavement has an estimated design life between 50 and 75 years, depending on various factors. The COR
concrete street segments include approximately 670 feet of Rhinestone Street between Sunwood Drive and the
Draw bridge, and 3,330 feet of Sunwood Drive between Zeolite Street and Rhinestone Street. Since these streets
were constructed, numerous cracks, gaps, and voids have formed which now require repairs. Staff will display
some pictures of the areas requiring repairs during the meeting. Or, if the Committee would prefer,we can walk
outside to review a few of the areas in person.
Staff is currently working to develop plans for permanent repairs but due to the significant costs and time it is
taking to research the necessary repairs and to develop plans the permanent repairs are not proposed to be
constructed until 2017. However, many of the cracks and voids are significant enough that Staff believes it is
necessary to complete temporary repairs this year due to safety concerns for pedestrians and bicyclists, particularly
within the crosswalks.
Staff received a quote from Reshetar Systems in the amount of$15,000 to complete the temporary repairs this
summer. This work will consist primarily of cleaning loose debris from the cracks and voids, filling the cleaned out
cracks and voids with new concrete, and painting the crosswalk repairs to match existing striping and colored
concrete within the crosswalks. However, since this quote was received Staff identified additional areas of concern
on the Draw bridge approach panels. While this work will increase costs slightly, all work is still estimated to cost
less than$18,000.
Timeframe:
Staff estimates this case will take 10 minutes to present and discuss with the Committee.
Observations/Alternatives:
Reshetar Systems proposes to complete the temporary concrete pavement repairs during the week of July 18th.
Appropriate traffic control measures will be installed while completing the work, though no detours or full lane
closures are proposed.
Funding Source:
This work will be funded using Street Maintenance Funds budgeted for 2016.
Recommendation:
N/A
Action:
