<br /> I Itwlled to serve as commul~lty town meeting organizers--to
<br /> participate in a unified, high-profile project to fight school-age
<br /> ~lrug and alcohol abuse throtlgh information sharing, public
<br /> liwareness, and'consolldatecl action. In February, WQED
<br /> anr~unced THE CHEMICAl. 'pEOPLE project--a grassrools
<br /> I lhat would serve as the community's "trumpet call to
<br /> lifo.rl
<br /> anTiS," By May, 1982, more thap 12,000 people were involved in
<br /> ewer 100 local organizational elforts. Today, tens of thousands of
<br /> C;HIEMICAL PEOPLE Task Forces have been formed nationally to
<br /> I address their afea's chemical abuse problems on a long-range
<br /> ~sls.
<br /> I~ased on the enormous success of the Pittsburgh effort, Lloyd
<br /> IKaiser, WQED President, decided to go national. With direcl
<br /> llUpport from The White Hou~ and funding from Metropolitan
<br /> I. tle Corporation, the Richard'l<ing Mellon Foundation, and the
<br /> ~,orporation for Public Broadcasting, two comprehensive
<br /> i programs were produced for flational airing on the er. tire PBS

<br />Hosted by First Lady Nancy Reagan and ed-heated by
<br />celebrities Bill BIxby, Bruce Waltz, Rite Moreno, end Mk:hael
<br />Leaden, this program Presents an alarmlr~g overview of the drug
<br />and alcohol problem. In faal.paced dramatic and documentary
<br />sequences, the ·program deals with:
<br />· The pervasiveness pf the chemical uae/abuse among you~
<br /> people
<br />· Breaking down' the "wall of denial" among parents, kids,
<br /> communities, and organlzations--a psychological wall
<br /> which permits the delusion that abuse occurs "in the rmx1
