The Emergency Shelter Sponors' Fund pays for the <br />cost of stay for women and children who are ineligible for assistance from <br />their. County Welfare Department. <br /> <br />The mission of Alexandra House, Inc. is to break the generational cycle of <br />domestic violence by providing safe, temporary shelter; crisis intervention; <br />support networks for battered women and their children; as well as, c~ty <br />education and class advocacy. To this end, in 1984, Alexandra House will: <br /> <br />- provide shelter and support services* to 500 battered women and their <br /> children; <br /> <br />- provide support, information and referrals to an additions] t,000 women <br /> and men over the phone; <br /> <br />- Operate support groups for battered women, groups for children of battered <br /> women, and parenting groups; <br /> <br />Sponsor 16 support activities (e.g. educatioo~l, social', and recreational) <br />for ex-residents and battered women in the community; <br /> <br />Provide education and training to 34 c~,~nity groups 'and organizations. <br /> <br />One of seven shelters in the metropolitan area, Alexandra House serves primarily <br />the northern c~ties of Anoka, Hennepin, Ramsey and Washington counties. We <br />have housed over 1,400 women and children and have built a reputation for innova- <br />tive programming; our Outreach Program for ex-residents and battered women in <br />the community is considered a model .by other programs in this state; our Children's <br />Program was accepted for funding by the United Way of Minneapolis in 1983. The <br />Emergency Shelter Program however, remains the most important service we offer to <br />battered women. <br /> <br />Domestic violence continues to be a pervasive social problem. Every 18 seconds <br />a wGnen is assaulted by her spouse. For every woman who receives shelter at <br />Alexandra House, another must be referred elswhere do to lack of space. The <br />Minnesota Department of Corrections estimates that every year approximately <br />35,000 women are assaulted by their partners in this state. The United Way of <br />Minneapolis has made domestic .violence a top priority for funding. <br /> <br />*Support services include individual and group counseling; information about <br />and assistance in utilizing legal, medical and welfare services; child care; <br />and transportation. <br /> <br /> <br />
