Parks Classification System <br /> <br />The present park system includes two general categories; local parks and linear <br />parks. This classification system is designed to avoid duplication and associated <br />increased costs and serve a specific clientele: one neighborhood, one park district <br />(several neighborhoods) or the total community. <br /> <br />Local Parks <br /> <br />PLAYLOTS <br /> <br />Size: Usually less than five acres. <br />Equipment: Can support play equipment, a small ballfield, trails and a pleasure <br />skating rink. <br />Purpose: Designed only for informal recreation due to their reduced size. <br /> <br />MINI-PARKS <br /> <br />Size: Usually less than five acres. <br />Equipment: Primarily a passive use park, physiography limits development of <br />playfields. May have picnic, playground equipment, trails. <br />Purpose: Primarily open space/informal passive use. <br /> <br />NEIGHBORHOOD PARKS <br /> <br />Size: Usually four to fifteen acres of developed recreation area. <br />Equipment: Can support game field, play equipment, basketball court, tennis <br />court, trails and a pleasure skating rink. <br />Purpose: Design primarily for informal recreational use. <br /> <br />COMMUNITY PLAYFIELDS <br /> <br />Size: Usually 25 to 100 acres of developed land for intensive recreational use. <br />Equipment: Primarily an athletic complex. Each provide several regulation <br />game fields, shelter buildings with public utility services, large parking lots, <br />hockey and pleasure skating rinks, large units of play equipment, basketball <br />courts, tennis courts and game lighting as needed. <br />Purpose: Designed to serve a park district which includes several <br />neighborhoods. By design, they may serve a multi-function when <br />neighborhood parks are insufficient to serve the area. <br /> <br />COMMUNITY PARKS <br /> <br />Size: At least 25 to 100 acres of land. <br />Equipment: Active and passive recreation based on natural site amenities such <br />as a lake, river, creek or woods. <br />Purpose: Serves the entire community.
