PC CASE

CONSIDER AUTHORIZATION TO HIRE TWO FULL'TIME,
TEMPORARY BUILDING INSPECTORS

Givonna Reed, Human Resources Manager

Background:

The Community Development Director and the Building Official recently approached the City
Administrator to discuss the volume of inspections and the need for additional Building
Inspectors. The Building Official proposed that the City bring the two unpaid Building Inspector
interns on as full-time, temporary, paid Building Inspectors at a rate of $15 per hour.- The interns
cmTently work 20 hfs per week each and they do residential inspections. If brought on as full-
time temporary employees they would work through the end of this year and they would be
responsible fbr residential inspections which would enable one of the City's full-time regular
Building Inspectors to assist with plan review.

These full-time temporary positions, if approved, would be funded with revenues from building
permits, which have exceeded original projections.

Please see the attached information sheet from the Building Department which illustrates the
need tbr additional staff in greater detail.

Staff Recommendation:

Staff is recommending that the Council authorize staff to hire the two unpaid interns as full-time
temporary Building Inspectors at $15 per hour through the end of 2004.

Committee Action:

Motion to recommend that the City Council authorize staff to hire the two unpaid interns as full-
time temporary Building Inspectors at $15 per hour through the end of 2004.

Reviewed by:
Community Development Director
Building Official

PC: I}7/13/04
