It was necessary to send one of three different
letters to each resident. Version I reflects the fact that samples were
collected by both the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and Waste
Management of Minnesota and that traces of methylene chloride were found by
both laboratories. Version II reflects the fact that samples were collected
by both parties and methylene chloride was detected only by the Minnesota
Department of Health (MPCA's lab). Version III reflects the fact that samples
were collected only by the MPCA (at one well only). Despite these obvious
differences, please note that the basic conclusion is the same for every well
sampled; none of the wells showed detectable concentrations of volatile organic
compounds and the presence of methylene chloride in the sample is attributed to
background laboratory contamination and is not reflective of well water quality.

We hope the enclosed letters answer any questions you may have regarding this
sampling. If you have any other questions, please contact me at 612/296-7266.

Sincerely, /~

Michael Wiltfan~, Hydrogeologist
Hazardous Wste Permit and Review Unit
Regulatory Compliance Section
Solid and Hazardous Waste Division

MW:cj

Enclosures

Phone: 612/296-726_6
1935 West County Road B2, Roseville, Minnesota 55113-2785
Regional Offices · DuluthiBrainerd/Detroit Lakes,'Marshall/Rochester
Equal Opportunity Employer
