I
I
I
:1
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I

MEMO

TO:

FROM:

DATE:

RE:

Ramse¥ City Council

City Engineer

January 7~ 1986

Report on the December 19, 1~85 Meeting on the Status of
Anoka Groundwater Investigation

the

As requested at your December 17, 1985 council meeting, I attended the
December 19, 1985 meeting of the Anoka County Environmental Services
Committee.

The meeting consisted of a presentation by Waste Management, Inc. and
Hickok and Associates on the status of the remedial groundwater
investigation of the Anoka Sanitary Landfill.

Mr. Larry Johnson, the Project Manager from Hickok and Associates
reported the following conclusions he had reached from the
investigation:

2.
3.
4.

The landfill has no impact to the west and north.
The landfill has limited impact to the southeast.
The bedrock is approximately 100 feet below the ground surface.
The landfill is underlain by the Grantsberg Till which slopes in
all directions.
Both the bedrock and the drift groundwater elevations slope to
the southeast.
The groundwater on the west side of the landfill is high in
nitrates and chlorides. He believes the high levels are due to
on-site wastewater disposal systems.
The contamination at Well No. 8 is located above the till.
No contamination has been found along Sunfish Lake Boulevard.
All contamination found to date is restricted to Waste Management
property.
Contaminant levels found at the Anoka Landfill are low compared
to other landfills.
The landfill impact is a manageable situation.

Waste Management indicated that there were several things which would
require further investigation. Those items are as follows:

The extent of the contamination on the south and southeast
both vertically and horizontally.

To prove that the high level of nitrates and chlorides on the
west side of the landfill are not coming from the landfill
Waste Management proposes to add two piezometers.

3. Water quality in the lower shallow drift.
