Zack Ellsworth
City of Ramsey Parks and Recreation Intern, 2015
10/28/2015
Recreation Inventory Executive Summary
From May, 2015 through October, 2015 the City of Ramsey Parks and Recreation Department
took inventory of all the programmed recreation opportunities within a 15 minute drive of
Ramsey. City Hall was chosen as the starting point for the measurement. Next, parks and
recreation catalogues from nearby city parks and recreation departments, school districts,
Anoka County, Three Rivers Park District, and private recreation businesses were examined and
their programming categorized into 127 separate categories and entered into a spreadsheet.
This spreadsheet was divided by age group and into non-athletic, athletic non-competitive, and
athletic competitive categories, and details of each offering were listed in comment boxes. Even
a quick review of the spreadsheet reveals potential areas to fill in recreational programing
where it is not currently offered in close proximity to Ramsey and/or to age group(s) who may
benefit by its being offered. These potential areas to increase opportunities will be evaluated
for feasibility and likely interest and then will be put into a community interest survey to find
out which of these areas community members would actually like offered through
programming.
Background Demographic Information
Data was compiled from the 2000 and 2010 US Census and the U.S. Census Bureau's 2008-2012
American Community Survey.
Important demographic statistics
• In 2000 Ramsey's total population was 18,510, by 2010 that number had grown to
23,668
• In 2000 10.17% (1,882) were ages 55+
• In 2010 18.2% (4,308) were ages 55+, an increase of 129%
• In 2000 the largest age bracket was 35-39. 10 years later that same group, now in the
45-49 age bracket was still the largest. Extrapolating to today 2015, this group is
beginning to age into the 55+ bracket and will be entirely within it by 2020.
• In 2012 there were
0 8,091 households, 1,114 with one or more adults aged 65+, 3,578 with one or
more people under age 18.
0 1,496 children enrolled in grades 9-12.
0 1,911 people with a disability.
■ Of those, 272 were under 18, 1,061 were between 18-64, and 578 were
65+
Initial Findings
Areas that merit further study into whether or not they could benefit from expanded
programming include
