COMMISSION BUSINESS
5:01 Appoint Vice Chair
Motion by Commissioner Mobry, seconded by Commissioner Trappen to nominate
Commissioner Logan as Vice Chair of the Park and Recreation Commission.
Motion carried. Voting Yes: Chair Bennett, Commissioners Mobry, Trappen, Logan, Fyten, and
Logan. Voting No: None. Absent: Commissioner Troy.
5.02: Recommend to City Council the Final Approval for the 2016 Parks Capital
Improvements
Parks & Assistant Public Works Superintendent Riverblood reviewed the purpose of this case is
to recommend three of the 2016 Parks Capital Improvements for City Council consideration. The
three projects that are ready for implementation at this time are the drinking fountain (with
misting station), the large filtration system for The Draw's irrigation, and expanded parking at
Central Park. The Park Improvement Trust Fund would be the funding source for each of the
aforementioned capital improvements.
What is it?
The Netafim Auto flushing filter system is specially designed for surface water containing algae
and other organic materials such as reservoirs, canals, rivers and wastewater applications.
Why it's needed?
The system will help cut down the amount of staff hours used in maintaining the irrigation
system as well as help with the ascetics of the park.
How does it work?
A filter element(spine) contains a stack of compressed discs with an overlapping
Series of grooves that force the debris to move through
The numerous trap points. As debris in the filter increases, the backflush process is initiated
reversing the flow of water and discharging it back into the pond.
Without the Netafim filter system:
Presently in any given year 24 zones of irrigation containing 851 heads (of 2000) have to be
cleaned of algae and other organic materials. This process entails a full time staff member as well
as a seasonal staff member approximately 72 hours cleaning debris form each irrigation head
with a wire brush one by one. This cleaning process has to be done at least twice annually at an
estimated total of$5,160 on each occurrence.
Park and Recreation Commission/August 17, 2016
Page 2 of 5
