I II I I I I I I I I I I I I I I I Joe LeLeux, Chairman Landfill Adhoc Committee Dear Mr. LeLeux, At the April 23rd City Council meeting, there was some discussion of the study currently being conducted by your committee into the usage of landfill trust money, and the interest generated from that trust. I am sure your committee is very concerned over the future use of those funds; since it is not yet known the scope or nature of future problems relative to the landfill and the surrounding area. It has been a goal of the Economic Development Commission to encourage business development not just in prime retail and commercial areas, but also in the industrial park adjacent to the landfill. As with residents near the landfill, businesses also have concerns locating in an area in close proximity to the landfill. They fear property devaluation or poor market_ability, the possible contamination, and possible relocation expenses. Therefore, it becomes difficult to promote economic development in this type area. We would like you to consider these problems during your study of the use of the landfill trust fund. It would be a great help if we could offer these businesses some assurances which might negate their concerns over future problems resulting from their proximity to the landfill sight. We would also ask that you discuss the possibility of allocating any excess funds which may be available to the Economic Development Commission to be used to promote the growth and expansion of new and existing businesses in that area.
