Provide local governments with more information about the kinds of <br />technical assistance the Council offers them by giving them a <br />brochure with descriptions and staff members to contact for help. <br /> <br />6. Send sumartes of more Council plans, reports and data to local <br /> governments. <br /> <br />OBJECTIVE #2: Increase understanding among citizens of regional public <br /> issues and the Metropolitan Council's role in addressing <br /> them; and encourage more citizens to become involved in <br /> planning for the region's future by informing them of <br /> ways to have input into Council decisions. <br /> <br />STRATEGIES: <br /> <br />Continue to use Council publications, and increase use of audio- <br />visuals and video tapes to inform citizens about emerging regional <br />issues. <br /> <br />2. Increase the use of educational materials on regional issues and the <br /> Council in the region's classrooms. <br /> <br />Prepare public information materials on citizen participation that <br />highlight the opportunities for citizen input, e.g., serving on <br />Council advisory con~nittees, commission or task forces; appearing at <br />public hearings; receiving Council mailings, etc. <br /> <br />Achieve broader representation of the metropolitan con~nunity when <br />appointing members of metropolitan commissions (parks and open space, <br />waste control and regional transit) by: 1) widely publicizing <br />vacancies and selection criteria~ and 2) having an appointments <br />co~ittee of Council members that conducts one or more public <br />hearings where candidates may state their qualifications and views, <br />and that recommends a list of nominees to the full Council. <br /> <br />OBJECTIVE #3: Involve special communities in setting regional policies <br /> and making decisions about regional problems, especially <br /> business, labor and protected classes (minorities, women <br /> and handicapped people). <br /> <br />STRATEGIES: <br /> <br />Develop a community outreach strategy to identify and work with <br />special con~nunities to increase their participation in Council <br />decision-making. <br /> <br />2.- Recruit representatives from these groups for citizen advisory <br /> con~nittee vacancies. <br /> <br />3. Distribute regular Council publications to 'nonmainstream" <br /> organizations as an ongoing information source on Council activities. <br /> <br />Publicize Council activities, hearing.dates, etc., in minority <br />organization, neighborhood, chamber of commerce and other organi- <br />zation and sublocal newsletters. <br /> <br /> <br />
