No. 5
and Azurite Street N.W.

Dear Council Members:

As requested at your January 22, 1985 council meeting, we have
reviewed the grade problem at C.S.A.H. No. 5 and Azurite Street N.W.

A survey of the Azurite Street N.W. centerline showed that the first
45 feet starting at the edge of the northbound lane of C.S.A.H. No. 5
had a grade of 3.72%. The following 25 feet had a grade of 10.4%.

Generally, it is desirable to limit the grade of the first 50 feet on
a side street adjacent to a major highway to 2.0%. Also, the shoulder
grade should slope away from the traveled lane instead of towards the
traveled lane as currently exists at Azurite Street N.W.

To improve the grade problem at C.S.A.H. No. 5 and Azurite Street
N.W., we would recommend sloping the shoulder away from the traveled
lane and limiting the grade for the first 50 feet to 2.0%. We would
also propose continuing for the next 100 feet at a 5.0% grade. This
change will require a cut of approximately 2.5 feet at the concrete
driveway on the east side of Azurite Street N.W. In addition, the
concrete driveway would have to be sloped back 53 feet from the edge
of the street.

The estimated cost of' the proposed change is $12,330, which includes
20% for overhead costs. We have contacted the Anoka County Highway
Department and they indicated they would pay for the costs involved
with the work within the County right-of-way. We have estimated those
costs to be ~2,170. Therefore, the City's estimated share of the
improvement ~~1 to $10,160.

civil · municipal · planning · soils · land surveying
