These test results are part of the investigation stage
of the consent order between Waste Management and the Minnesota
Pollution Control Agency.

Based on the Environmental Protection Agency's Guidelines, some
of the wells had detectable levels of carcinogenic pollutants
present. Acetone was also detected in a number of the wells.
Three wells 5, 13B and 14B were found to have nitrate concentra-
tions exceeding the Drinking Water Standard of 10'mg/1.

I have discussed the test results with Mr. Robert Hutchison and
Waste Management Inc. They do not believe that the elevated
nitrate levels in wells 5, 13B & 14B are caused by the landfill,
since the wells are located on the northwest side of the landfill
and the groundwater flow is in a southeasterly direction. Fur-
ther tests will be conducted to determine the source of the
nitrates. Mr. Hutchison stated that the presence of acetone in
several of the samples may have. resulted from laboratory or
testing procedures. Further tests will be conducted to verify
this. In addition, 16 or 17 additional wells will be installed
as part of the investigative phase of the cOnsent order to help
determine the extent ~and concentration of the pollution surround-
ing the landfill site.

vh'il · municipal · planning · soils · land surve),in£ · landscape architecture
