d. Trails should avoid sharp curves, keep curves gradual, avoid curves
at the bottom of kills.

e. Trail width (one way)

(1) flat and gentle slopes 3' - 4'
(2) moderate slopes 6' - 8'
(3) steep slopes 9' - 10'

f. Vertical clearance 7' - 8' above snow
g. Horizontal clearance - as necessary
h. Trail surfacing should be natural or wood chips.

i. Access to trails should be every five to ten miles in the Rural Service
Area and every one mile in the Urban Service Area.

Hiking Trail Guidelines

a. Slopes should average 5 percent; slopes of more than 15 percent should be
avoided since these are tiring and can create erosion problems.

Trail width should be 4' - 6'

c. Horizontal clearance 8' - 10'

d. Vertical clearance 8'

e. Typical trail surfacing includes asphalt, concrete,.~wood ah-~ps and
natural surface.

Snowmobile Trail Guidelines

a. Safety considerations for snowmobiling include adequate sight distances
(200' - 300'), adequate signing of areas such as road crossings and
intersections. Trails should avoid road crossings where feasible.

b. Trails should be laid out to hold snow. Methods of achieving this are:

(1) north facing slopes; avoid south facing slopes

(2) valleys

(3) areas of vegetation

(4) woods

(5) tree lines

Trails should follow the fall line of slopes and not run parallel
zo contours for long distances. Trails on side slopes can cause
easy sliding of snowmobiles. ..

d. Snowmobile trails should be 15 to 50 miles long.

e. Occasional open areas are desirable.

f. Curves should not have a radius of less than 25 feet.

g. Trails in the Urban Service Area can be bermed and/or planted for
noise control where necessary.

-11-
