s%

Septe.mber 10, 1979

29 6-5 710

Lloyd Schnelle
City Administrator
City of Ramsey
15153 Nowthen Blvd.
Anoka, Mn 55303

Dear Mr. Schnelle:

The Minnesota Department of Transpor. tation is currently perfor.ming
a 2nd-order horizontal control survey along the ~oute of State
Trunk Highway 47 from the junction of. U.S. Highway 10 in Anoka
to the Town of St. Francis. The survey consists of placing
permanent concrete monuments 12 inches in diameter and 4% feet
in depth into the ground at approximately 2 mile intervals.
From these monuments, precise angles and distances are measured
to determine their horizontal position with reference to
latitude and longitude and to the Minnesota State Plane
Coordinate System. The purpose of this type of sUrvey is to
provide permanent horizontal control monuments at 2-3 mile
intervals that are accessible to State, County, City, and
private surveyors so that all surveys are related to .one..
datum. This is especially important when e.stablishing land
boundaries. The Department of Transpor. tation is presently
doin'g surveys along Trunk Highway 47 to determine and monument
the right of way, and to provide control, for proposed bridge
replacements.

Three of the proposed monument locations are on property
belonging to the City of Ramsey. One is located southeast
of the new City Hall, the secOnd one is located at the Trott
Brook Cemetery, and the third is at the old City Hall. A
portable survey tower will be used to make the measurements
from the monument at the cemetery. The survey tower is
necessary in order to see over the t~ees to .our monuments
located along the highway. The tower consists of a lattice
structure resembling a farm windmill that is erected to a
height of 64 feet. The tower takes one day to .er. ect and one
day to make the required measurements and then take it down.

An Equal Opportunity Employer
