Consider Demolition of Buildings At 14280 Sunfish Lake Blvd NW
By: Scan M. Sullivan, Economic Development / TIF Specialist
William Goodrich, City Attorney

Backgrmmd:

In 2001 thc city acquired land from Waste Management of Minnesota adjacent to the landfill site. A
major portion ot' that land was platted into Sunfish Lake Business Park First and Second Additions.
14280 Starfish Lake Boulevard was separated from all the other parcels due to a large wetland. Thus, the
parcel was left (>ut of the plat and left as is. Currently, a vacant building sits on the site in very poor
condition. Its location adjacent to Ramsey's largest employer (Life Fitness) does not help provide a
positive image for this business. The property is located outside of any TIF districts so it would be
necessary to fred a different method of funding the demolition. The EDA has not funded demolition in
the past and it would be setting a precedent for possible future projects. The EDA at its August 9, 2004
mcctmg passed a motion that recommended that Council authorize the demolition of the building
utilizing tkmcls fi'om the EDA.

Quotes have been received from the following contractors:

· Sauter & Sons $ 9,500.00
· I)rydcn Excavating $ 10,233.00

Recommendation:

Start' recommends that the City Council authorize Staff to get quotes and award contract to lowest quote
to razc thc buildings at 14280 Sunfish Lake Boulevard.

Authorize that t~mds fi'om the EDA budget be spent on the demolition.

Council Action:

Motion to direct Staff to get quote and award contract to lowest quote to raze the buildings at 14280
Sunfish l~akc Boulevard

-and-

Motion to attthorize expenditure from EDA budget for the demolition of buildings ~ 14280 Sunfish
Lakc Boulevard

Reviewed by:
Michael McDowell, Engineering Tech IV

CC: 08/24/04
