City of Ramsey

15153 Nowlhen Bouleva~cl N.W., Anoka, MJnne:~ota 55303 ~, (612) 427-1410

March 4, 1980

Governor Albert H. Quie
Governor, State of Minnesota
State Capitol Building
St. Paul, Minnesota 55155

Dear Governor Quie:

The City of Ram~ey is aware that the University of Minnesota's
student newspaper, known as the Minnesota Daily, has a continuous
history, during the past several years, of not maintaining the
respectability in journalism that one would expect from our Uni-
versity newspaper. Inasmuch as the University of Minnesota does
confer degrees in journalism, we feel that the department should
exercise more supervision in the publishing of the above paper.
However, in view of the fact that the University of Minnesota does
not provide the guidance in seeing that the Minnesota Daily com-
plies with good journalism practices, it is requested that public
funds be removed in. the financing of this paper. We believe that
the citizens of the State of Minnesota have a right to expect the
very highest standards in its University newspaper when the state
taxpayers are footing the bill.

We respectfully request that the State Legislature take the appro-
priate action to assure that sound professional journalism'practices
are returned to the University of Minnesota and the Minnesota Daily.
One alternative we suggest is that a student be permitted to indi- '
vidually designate whether or not he wants any of his fees to go
toward supporting the Minnesota Daily.

Finally, the Ramsey City Council finds it difficult to understand
how o~r University can employ professors who have political views
that are not consistent with those of the founding fathers of this
State and Nation. It is most alarming to hear these people (pro-
fessors) express opinions in the media which are inconsistent, we
believe, with the best interests of this country. If these same
people were working for private enterprise they would most likely
find their jobs terminated. Consequently, why do the taxpayers
have to tolerate professors who do not necessarily buy our country's
