Sewer and water construction scheduled

Approximately 4 million dollars' worth of
sewer and water facilities will be installed In
Minnetonka in 1980. The areas of cow-
struclion, authorized by the City Council at
a public hearing on January 28, are shown
on the map below.
Construction activity will begin In these
areas between Apdl and July and, barring
unforeseen delays, all work will be substan-
tially completed and utilities ready for
hookup by mid-November.
Due to rising construction costs and the
large-lot, semi-rural character of Minne-
tonka, the costs of sewer and water are
quite high. Owners of half acre residential
lots receiving sewer and waler service will
be assessed an estimated $8,144 for
sewer and wale r lateral plus $916 for trunk
water.
Laterals are the 6" to 12" diameter pipes
installed in the streets. Service stubs and a

new bituminous street are included as part
of the lateral cost. Trunk assessments
cover installation of the larger pipes, pro-
duction and storag.e facilities.
Some of the project areaswhich already
have municipal sewer will be assessed an
estimated $5,299 per half acre residential
lot for water lateral and $916 per half acre
lot for water trunk. An even smaller number
of homes which already have water but not
sewer will be assessed approximately
$6,049 for sewer lateral for the typical half
acre lot.
The assessment rates have increased
approximately 696 the last year. However,
the terms offered by'the City for payment of
the assessments are very good and help
lessen the burden somewhat. For example,
the assessment is collected with the real
estate taxes. The first payment for resF
dents receiving sewer and water in 1980
will not be due until 1982. The assessment

is spread over a long pedod of years for
collection, and interest is charged only on
the unpaid balance. For elderly citizens on
fixed incomes, the City Council has estab-
lished a deferment policy which provides
some relief.
It is not possible to construct sewerand
water utilities without disrupting the area
and causing some inconvenience to the
residents. However, by keeping generally
informed of the projects, most potential
problems can be avoided or at least mini-
mized. The City will be holding informative
meetings and mailing monthly informational
reports to all project area residents to help
keep them apprised. Project inspectors will
be on the job at all times during the
construction. Police and fire personnel will
be continually informed of the construction
progress, so that their essential services
can be maintained throughout the con-
struction-period.

I:::ITY OF

The dark areas on this map indicate
locations of sewer and/or water con-
struction due to begin in A~rit Residents

MINNETONKA

j~5301

What's happening on
Minnehaha Creek?.
Last fall the Board of Managers of
Minnehaha Creek Watershed District let a
contract to C.S. McOrossan Company to do
some dredging on Minnehaha Creek. This
dredging is now taking place on the creek
one half mile upstream and one half mile
downstream of Interstate 494. A survey of
the stream bed of the creek showed there
were areas where the stream bed was as
much as one and one half feet higher than
what the stream bed should be. 'l~he Board
felt these high spots should be removed to
enable the new water control structure
currently being placed at Gray's Bay Dam
to work as design ed. All the dredge material
is being hauled away from the creek bed
itself.
The dredging work should be completed
by the middle of this month. Gales for the
control structure will not be placed until
after the spring run-off which will be con-
trolled by temporary stop logs placed in
the control structure.

Census jobs available
If you're interested in working on. the
1980 census, there are still job opportdni-
~t_ies available, either full or part time, in your
in construction areas will be kept in-:.~i !.~-~nne~ghborhood.
