PW CAS : #

UPDATE ON YEAR 2000 CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS
By: Steve Jankowski, City Engineer

Background:

This is intended to be the beginning of a periodic update of the Committee on the status of all
construction projects anticipated or underway during the current fiscal year. Attached is the
February status of projects. The project descriptions have been kept relatively short so that they
can be easily referenced. However, some of the projects do include other elements not listed in
the table. Fore example, the T.H. #47 STP project also includes Sunwood Drive and the sanitary
sewer and watermain extensions that are incidental to said project. I will also have available at
the meeting an illustrated schedule for these projects.

At the present time there are two projects which have yet to be initiated by selecting an engineer:
(1) the 143''d Avenue extension from Jaspar to C.R. #116, and (2) the comprehensive water utility
project which includes the elements of constructing a well house, designing connecting
watermain piping between the new well and tower and the existing system. Since the connecting
watermain fi'om the new well needs to be connected into the existing main on Ramsey
Boulevard, the scope of this work should also include the design of Sunwood Drive from the
well house to Ramsey Drive. The completion of Well No. 5 is a critical element, which will
require that this engineer be selected before mid-April. The selection of an engineer for the 143''d
project should be done as soon as possible to expedite an early completion.

The Storm Sewer Improvement 2000 project includes two separate storm water projects at this
time: the Juniper Ridge Drive project and the 164th Avenue storm sewer project. The need for an
additional storm project should be considered to best coordinate with the 2000 Street
Maintenance Program. The Flintwood subdivision is scheduled for bituminous overlay.
However, the drainage is very poor at the intersection of 142nd Avenue and Fluorine and Iodine
Streets. Unless these intersections are storm sewer, it might be anticipated that the overlay
would have a relative short life. Staff would propose a storm sewer project consisting of
installing storm sewer for this area prior to the overlay. A CIP sheet is attached to this case
illustrating this project. The cost is estimated to be $72,500 and would be funded through the
storm water utility.

Committee Action:

Motion to recommend adding the Flintwood storm sewer project to the 2000 storm drainage
utility projects.

Reviewed by:

City Administrator
Director of Public Works
Finance Officer

PW: 02/15/00
