Gamec
Mayor of the City of Ramsey
15153 Nowthen Boulevard N.W.
Ramsey, Minn. 55303

Dear Mayor Gamec:

Thank you for your letter regarding recruitment efforts by
the military forces in schools. I sba.re your City Councilts
concerns on this matter.

The legislature delegates a great deal of the control of
public schools torthe local schoOl board. It is the school board's
responsibility to determine policies regarding educational and
occupational recruitment. In 19.79, the legislature did require
school boards to provide recruiters for the military services the
same access to school students as the board provides to other
recruiters.

I think that most Minnesota school boards provide appropriate
recruiting opportunities to representatives of the military forces.
I would suggest that your resolution should Be sent to the school
boards in those districts where schools are not allowing adequate
visits by military forces recruiters.

At the present time I think that the NavX and other branches
of the military should deal directly with local school Boards.
The state law passed last year is a vehicle for this. I should
point out however, that there are several private schools on the
Navy's list. The state has very little control over these schools
and the 1979 /aw I mentioned does not apply to them.

I appreciate receiving a copy of the City Council's recommendation.
I hope this is a matter that will be handled appropriately By local
school boards.

Sincerely,

State Representative
District 18B

MBc/nc

169 State Office Building, St. Paul, Mi~;r'~::~,~ .~. a 55155
601 North Wa nut, St. M~chael, Mmne _~-:,~',~!,~376

(612) 296-4237

(612) 497-2572
