MIGRATION OF LANDFILL PRODUCTS FROM THE

ANOKA SANITARY LANDFILL LOCATED AT RAMSEY

BACKGROU ND

The Anoka Sanitary Landfill located at Ramsey began operat-

ing in 1967. The 160-acre-site is currently operated by Waste.
Management of Minnesota, Inc., and it is owned by the City of
Anoka. Ownership is scheduled to be transferred to the City
of Ramsey in October, 1981.

The future use of the site is public open space or recreational.
About 60 to 70 acres of the site will be filled, and the fill will
rise about 130 feet above, grade. A lime sludge cap has been ap-
plied to the west slope to prevent infiltration of precipitation.
Potential leachate formation and-.migration are monitored by five
surficial groundwater wells and two.lysimeters.
In 1972 the City of Ramsey approved subdivision of' an area
adjacent to the west side ~f.~_he /~ndfil-1; at the present time
there are five homes within 150 feet of the landfill property line.
A thick 'stand of pine trees on the north and west. sides of the
landfill provides a visual barrier between residences and the
landfill.

In 1978 Waste Management of-Minnesota, Inc. instaIled

a gas collection and venting system designed by EMCON Associates
(San Jose, CA) on the west side of the landfill to prevent the pos-
sible migration of landfill gases beyond the landfill property.
The migration of gases is controlled by 15 wells, each 14 to 24
feet deep, connected to a motor/blower/exhaust system housed in
the control building (Figure 1). Details of the system are given

in Appendix A.
