REFER CITIZEN PETITION CONCERNING SPEED LIMIT
ON BAUGH STREET TO ANOKA COUNTY
PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE FOR CONSIDERATION
By Steven J Jankowski, City Engineer

Background:

At the citizen input segment of the Septemberl3, 2004 City Council meeting a petition
signed by 16 residents along CR 83 ( Baugh Street) was presented requesting a reduction
in the speed limit along Baugh Street from CR 63 (!73rd Ave) to CR 22 (181st Avenue)
fi'om the current speed limit of 55 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour. The petition cited
an increase in traffic from development and an urbanizing nature of the area as reasons
for the reduced limit. The City Council referred the petition to the Public Works
Committee which considered it at their September 21,204 meeting. The Public Works
Committee was sympathetic to the concerns of the petitioners represented by Mrs. Betty
Johnston who appeared at the public works committee meeting. However since Anoka
County has jurisdiction over the subject segment of roadway, the committee felt that it
was appropriate that this matter should be considered by Anoka County. This case is
being presented to the City Council at this time so as to expedite this matter to Anoka
County for consideration at the earliest opportunity.

Recommendation:

It is the recommendation of the Public Works Committee to forward the citizen petition
requesting the lowering of the speed limit on this segment of CR83 to the Anoka County
Public Works Committee for consideration at the earliest possible opportunity.

Action:

Motion to adopt Resolution 04-09-XXX which requests that the Anoka County Public
Works Committee consider the citizen petition requesting the lowering of the speed limit
on the subject segment of CR83 at the earliest possible opportunity.

Reviewed by:
Director of Public Works / Fire Chief
Assistant Director of Public Works / Principal City Engineer

CC: 9/28/04
