raise awareness of the important work that our Building Inspection Division staff does year-round
to ensure the safety of the buildings where we live, work, and play. If you are starting a
construction or remodeling project this spring, make sure to contact the Building Inspections staff
at Ramsey City Hall first to find out if a building permit is required. Building codes help ensure
that our homes and businesses meet the standards against collapse, fire and other potential dangers.
Visit www.cityoframsey.com/permits to learn more.

Recycling Successes
. On May 17th, the City of Ramsey was recognized for the 13th consecutive
year by the Anoka County Board of Commissioners for meeting or exceeding its annual recycling
goal. Ramsey residents recycled 2,539 tons of material in 2016, through both the curbside program
and the spring and fall recycling events. This is the equivalent of 205 pounds recycled per person
in Ramsey. Curbside recycling is provided through a contract with Ace Solid Waste, Inc. for all
single family and townhome residences. Three apartment complexes are also serviced (separately
from the curbside contract) by Walters Recycling and ACE Solid Waste. Ramsey’s 2016 goal for
recycling was 2,399 tons and, thanks to the efforts of Ramsey residents, we achieved 106% of that
goal!

There were also two other entities from Ramsey recognized by the Anoka County Board of
Commissions this week. First, the Ramsey Coborn’s was recognized as an Outstanding Business
for its efforts in implementing a recycling program. Coborn’s now provides single stream
recycling opportunities throughout their building, at the store entrances and at the gas pump
islands. It is estimated that these new recycling opportunities will divert over 51,000 pounds from
the trash stream!

PACT Charter School also was recognized with an Outstanding School award for implementing
both recycling and organics collection programs. They now collect organics and recyclables from
the lunchroom and bathroom and by doing so are not only saving money (they were able to reduce
the trash service from three times per week to once per week) but also diverting an estimated
20,500 pounds annually from the trash stream to be either recycled or composted!

Recreation Program Updates
On Friday, May 5, the City of Ramsey held its first ever "Movie
in the Park" event, where 90 community members enjoyed the movie “Meet the Robinsons”
together under the stars. Before the movie started, community members reveled in at Elmcrest
Park, with children on the playground, parents socializing, and families and kids playing together
on the soccer fields. Concessions were for sale, with members of Boy Scout Troop 143 aiding in
running the concessions stand. Movie in the Park is scheduled again for Friday, September 8,
beginning at 8:30pm at Elmcrest Park. Concessions will again be for sale prior to and during the
movie. Additional movie dates for July and August are being sought based upon requests from
participants.

Friday, May 12, was Art in the Park: Clay Fairy House, where 15 participants created their own
fairy houses at Rumriver Art Center. Once again, instructors and program content received positive
reviews. Overall, participants enjoyed the program but wished they had more time to work on their
masterpieces. This will be used to improve the structure of future classes that may be more in-
depth or involve less commonly known materials. Ideas or requests for programs?
