CASE #~,

UPDATE ON 169TM AVENUE AND NEON STREET
By: Steven J Jankowski, Ci~' Engineer

Background:

At its September meeting the Public Works Committee considered what measures might
be undertaken to alleviate a problem which was being, experienced at the corner of 169th
Avenue and Neon Street with vehicles sliding off the roadway. As a part of the solution
thc Public Works Committee directed that the Police department speed trailer be placed
near the intersection to alert the neighborhood of the concern of excessive speed w?fich is
contributing to the problem. The speed trailer was placed at the intersection last week.
Attached to this case is a copy of the report prepai-ed by the computer capabilities of the
trailer software. Although this report represents a twelve hour snap shot of the
intersection, it does appear only a small fraction of the motorists are exceeding
reasonable speeds. Only tlm'ee of 379 (less than 1%) vehicles were'found to. be traveling
at a speed greater than 40 miles per hour. The s~tdy also shows the maximum travel
speed of 87% of the motorists is 33 miles per hour or lower. The results of this speed
study might suggest that law enforcement be focused on the time periods shown to
exhibit the excessive speeds.

A ctio n:

None required.

Reviewed By:
D/rector of Public Works/Fire Chief
Assistant Public Works Director/PrinciPal Engineer
Police Chief

PW: 10/19/04

13
