gutter on Alpine Drive and may involve property acquisition as well. The costs
associated with establishing a crosswalk are relatively modest, about $1,000 per crossing.
Recommendations:
Staff recommends against the establishing of a crosswalk on Alpine Drive at this time for
the following reasons:
1. A safer long term solution appears to be available within a short time with the
completion of the trail system by completing the Alpine Acres trail and the
trail segment on the north side of Alpine west to CSAH 5.
2. Students utilizing this crossing will still be required to walk some distance
along the shoulder of CSAH 5 to reach the school unless an additional CSAH
5 crossing and adult crossing guard could be provided this fall.
3. The crossing would eliminate an extra walking distance which is being
traveled by students in other areas of the City.
However, if the Council decides to establish a crosswalk at this location because of the
relatively low cost of providing some temporary benefits, staff would recommend that it
be clearly identified as a crosswalk which would be removed at such time as the trail
system on the north side of Alpine Drive is extended west to CSAH 5.
Action:
Motion to deny the request for the crosswalk on Alpine Drive
or
Motion to approve the crosswalk as a temporary installation at such time as the trail
system is completed on the north side on Alpine Drive west to CSAH 5.
Reviewed By:
Director of Public Works/Fire Chief
Assistant Public Works Director/Principal Engineer
Police Chief
Street Maintenance Supervisor
Parks/Utilities Supervisor
CC: 11/09/04
