SunwoodDriveΑStreetImprovements <br />Ramsey,Minnesota <br />NTIProjectNo.16.61770.100 <br />GEOTECHNICALEVALUATIONOFRECOVEREDSOILSAMPLES <br />Wevisuallyexaminedrecoveredsoilsamplestoestimatedistributionofgrainsizes,plasticity, <br />consistency,moisturecondition,color,presenceoflensesandseams,andapparentgeologicorigin.We <br />thenclassifiedthesoilsaccordingusingtheUnifiedSoilClassificationSystem(ASTMD2488).Achart <br />describingthisclassificationsystemandgeneralnotesexplainingsoilsamplingproceduresarepresented <br />withinappendicesattachments. <br />Thestratificationdepthlinesbetweensoiltypesonthelogsareestimatedbasedontheavailabledata. <br />Insitu,thetransitionbetweentype(s)maybedistinctorgradualineitherthehorizontalorvertical <br />directions.Thesoilconditionshavebeenestablishedatourspecificboringlocationsonly.Variationsin <br />thesoilstratigraphymayoccurbetweenandaroundtheborings,withthenatureandextentofsuch <br />changenotreadilyevidentuntilexposedbyexcavation.Thesevariationsmustbeproperlyassessed <br />whenutilizinginformationpresentedontheboringlogs. <br />Werequestthatyou,yourdesignteamorcontractorscontactNTIimmediatelyiflocalconditionsdiffer <br />fromthoseassumedbythisreport,aswewouldneedtoreviewhowsuchchangesimpactour <br />recommendations.Suchcontactwouldalsoallowustoreviseourrecommendationsasnecessaryto <br />accountforthechangedsiteconditions. <br />FIELDEXPLORATIONPROCEDURES <br />SoilSamplingΑStandardPenetrationBoring: <br />SoilsamplingwasperformedaccordingtotheproceduresdescribedbyASTMD1586.Usingthis <br />procedure,a2inchO.D.splitbarrelsamplerisdrivenintothesoilbya140poundweightfalling30 <br />inches.Afteraninitialsetofsixinches,thenumberofblowsrequiredtodrivethesampleranadditional <br />12inchesisrecorded(knownasthepenetrationresistance(i.e.ͻbǝğƌǒĻͼΜofthesoilatthepointof <br />sampling.TheNvalueisanindexoftherelativedensityofcohesionlesssoilsandanapproximationof <br />theconsistencyofcohesivesoils. <br />SoilSamplingΑPowerAugerBoring: <br />Theboring(s)was/wereadvancedwitha6inchnominaldiametercontinuousflightauger.Asaresult, <br />samplesrecoveredfromtheboringaredisturbed,andourdeterminationofthedepth,extendofvarious <br />stratumandlayers,andrelativedensityorconsistencyofthesoilsisapproximate. <br />SoilClassification: <br />SoilsampleswerevisuallyandmanuallyclassifiedingeneralconformancewithASTMD2488asthey <br />wereremovedfromthesampler(s).Representativefractionsofsoilsampleswerethensealedwithin <br />respectivecontainersandreturnedtothelaboratoryforfurtherexaminationandverificationofthefield <br />classification.Inaddition,selectsamplesweresubmittedforlaboratorytests.Individualsample <br />information,identificationofsamplingmethods,methodofadvancementofthesamplesandother <br />pertinentinformationconcerningthesoilsamplesarepresentedonboringlogsandrelatedreport <br />attachments. <br /> <br />
