I
I
!
I
I
I
I
I
I

I
i
I
I
I
I
I
I

MEMORANDUM

DATE:

TO:.

FROM:

March 5, 1993

Park and Recreation Commission
Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Coordinator~

Wednesday, March 10, 1993 regular Park and Recreation Commission Meeting

In part, because there is not Commission action of critical press, Staff suggests that the Park and
Recreation Commission conduct March's meeting in a workshop format.

For your information, the Finance Committee (formally Budget Committee) is meeting on March
9, 1993. Finance Officer Helling has identified approximately $200,000.00 available for capital
improvements, equipment replacement or for new items to be purchased in 1993. It is expected
that the Committee will be primarily considering items deemed of merit but unfunded. The Park
and Recreation Commission's 1993 Capital Improvement request will be one of those items. City
Staff will be assisting the Finance Committee by consensus recommendation for funding the
previously request~ items.

As previously mentioned March's meeting may be a good opportunity for an informal discussion
on the City's recreation and natural resource policy and direction. With or without regard to the
above, the following items may provide fodder for the discussion:

1. ApprOve Park and Recreation Commission regular meeting minutes dated February 10,
1993.

Role of the Park and Recreation Commission or individuals in the Environmental Expo and
Tree Sale.

Assign 2 of the of the 17 park districts to each Commissioner with that Commissioner to
become intimately involved with those districts resources and constituents. The
Commission Chair could serve 5 districts.

Schedule periodic summer inspections of the parksl This could be in conjunction with
regular meetings as been done in the past. A tour of River's Bend park, for instance, may
involve discussion of maintenance practices, plant and animal identification, fishing,
planting a tree, constructing a shelter, etc. or simply providing area residents no excuse for
non-participation.

As with minimum park dedication, propose lot and subdivision minimum vegetative cover
establishment or protection (trees) for new developments.

Review park and trail map to ensure relevance.

Formulate standard questions for use in evaluating prospective Park and Recreation
Commissioners.

The above list is not intended to be comprehensive. Please propose any additional suggestions for
Commissiondiscussion or Staff direction. At the Commissions desire Staff will review the status
of new subdivisions, the Releaf Grant, Finance Committee action, Environmental Expo and other
programs and/or projects. As usual please feel free to call me at 427-1741 or 427-1410 if you
require any additional information or material available for your meeting.

I
