Summary of Apiary Plan
16137 Dysprosium St NW, Ramsey MN 55303
We would like to establish an apiary of up to six (6) honeybee hives on the residential property owned
by Kathleen and Charles Rosenow at 16137 Dysprosium St NW in Ramsey. We have reviewed the zoning
regulations regarding beekeeping within the City of Ramsey, and our apiary is designed to fully comply
with those regulations, as follows:
• The apiary will consist of 1-6 Langstroth movable frame hives, each less than 20 cubic feet in
volume. This type of hive is the industry standard in the United States.
• The apiary will be in the back yard, behind the house, 50 feet or more from any property line
and outside of all easements. The hives will be more than 10 feet from any existing structure.
• Water will be continuously available to the hives. County Ditch #66 crosses the property near
where the apiary will be located and the back of the property is on the Rum River.
• The hives will be buffered on the north, south, and east by wooded space that includes a
mixture of deciduous and coniferous vegetation. The house lies west of the apiary, between the
hives and the street.
• Reasonable precautions will be taken against bears, skunks and other predators that may be
attracted to the hives.
• The initial bee population will be obtained from a vendor known for docile strains and gentle
queens without swarming tendencies.
We recently completed the University of Minnesota Department of Entomology's "Beekeeping in
Northern Climates —Year 1" (certificate attached). We learned proper hive and colony management
techniques, including specific practices to control disease and prevent overcrowding and thus
minimizing the chance of swarming.
We are fully committed to establishing and maintaining the hives according to the City's regulations and
standards through well -established beekeeping practices that are known to develop successful,
neighborhood -friendly hives.
A sketch of the planned location of the apiary is attached, along with a statement from immediate
neighbors who are supportive of our endeavor.
Thank you for your consideration.
Respectfully submitted,
Kathleen Rosenow Date
