CHARTER AMENDMENT <br /> <br />Case <br /> <br />BACKGROUND <br /> <br />The City of Ramsey Charier Commission met on Thursday, October 20, 1988 and reviewed the <br />status report on the proposed amendment to the City Charter including a chapter entitled <br />"Police Department". After their review, the Charter Commission suggested amendments Io lhe <br />proposed Charter amendment and requests that the Cily Council unanimously adopt the revised <br />proposed Charter amendment. Reasons which were given were that the Charier amendment <br />would not be inconsistent with the City Charter and that by adopting the amendment the City of <br />Ramsey could forego the cosl of a special election. <br /> <br />On October 25, 1988 the City Council introduced an Ordinance amending the City Charter ~o <br />include the proposed Chapter "Police Depadment". Notice of a hearing (December 13, 1988) <br />on the proposed amendment Io the City Charter was published in the Anoka County Union and an <br />explanation included in the last issue of the Ramsey Resident. <br /> <br />The Council may at this time adopt the ordinance amending the City Charter. In doing so the <br />amendment will become effective 90 days form this date (March 13, 1989). Within 60 days <br />after passage and publication of the ordinance 2% of the registered voters can petition to force <br />the question to a vote. <br /> <br />COUNCIL ACTION <br /> <br />Motion to adopt an ordinance amending the City Charter to include a Chapter entilled <br />"Police Department". <br /> <br />Reviewed by: <br /> Administrator <br /> Attorney <br /> <br /> <br />
