John Shumway and his family came from the east by covered wagon and settled. <br />on land near the railroad tracks now owned by the Anoka Vocational -Tech School. <br />Cornelius Pitman and Daniel Harthorn also came with the Shumways and married <br />two of the Shumway girls. <br />Following is a copy of a land certificate issued to John Shumway. <br />"Whereas, John Shumway of Benton County and Minnesota Territory has <br />deposited in the General Land Office of the United States, a Certificate of the <br />Register of the Land Office at Stillwater hereby it appears that full payment has <br />been made by the said John Shumway according to the provisions of the Act of <br />Congress of the 24th of April, 1820, entitled "An Act making further provision <br />for the sale of public lands for Lot numbered four, Section thrity-four in Township <br />thirty-two of Range Twenty-five in the District of Lands subject to sale at Stillwater, <br />Minnesota Territory, containing Forty-eight acres and fifty hundredths of an acre <br />Signed by Franklin Pierce, Pres. of the United States of America <br />Aug. 1, 1853 <br />Recorded Vol. 1, page 281 E <br />Alfred Foster and wife (Mary Allen), son George Alfred and daughter, Lucretia, <br />came to Ramsey Township from Fairfield, Maine in about 1854. They could not <br />get their furniture up the river from St. Paul until the next spring. <br />Nov. 1855 Alfred Foster acquired land from Mark T. Berry (NW'% of NW1/4 <br />Sec. 34 and SW' of SW1% of Sec. 27, TWP. 32 North of R. 25) Benton County, <br />Terr. of Minnesota. <br />Dec. 20, 1855 Alfred Foster acquired land from Amasa H. Weeks (NE% of NW'/4 <br />Sec. 34-32—North of R. 25 West containing 40 acres, Benton Co. <br />Barnabas and Hannah Allen were relatives of Alfred Foster's wife, Mary Allen. <br />They owned the land formerly held by Myrtle Wilson and later by Dick Jude. <br />Therefore the Fosters and Allens owned a continuous strip on one side of the road. <br />60 <br />
