RESOLUTION
ENDORSES STAR OF THE
NORTH GAMES
Tho Anoka County Board of Commissioners
passed a resolution during the April 131h County
Board mooting endorsing the 1993 Star of the
North Summer Gamos which will host over 10,000
Minnesota athletes from June 25 - 27.
This year marks tho sixth anniversary of the
Star of the North Games, Minnesota's largest
annual amatour multi -sport evont. The Olympic
style competition provides an opportunity for
people of all ages to compete in 30 different
events, reflecting tho diverse abilities of
Minnesota athletes.
Tho wide variety of athletic events offered for
competition range from team sports like soccer,
basoball, volloyball and wrestling, to individual
sports like golf, karato, powerlifting and fencing.
Tho games also include divisions for special and
disabled athletes.
'11 takos many rosourcos to host an event that
welcomes so many athletes,' said Anoka County
Commissioner Margaret Langfeld, who believes
the events provide an opportunity to showcase the
Countys many athletic venues. 'Anoka County's
8,000 acros of park and rocroation space, along
with the many recroalional facilities offered by the
sponsor cities and communities, make this area
the perfect place to host the games.
'Coordinating offorts for an event of this size
is a tremendous job,' continued Langfeld. The
Star of the North Gamos have received generous
support from many communities who will serve as
host for the events - communilios such as Anoka,
Blaino, Coon Rapids, Centerville, Loxington, Lino
Lakes, Spring Lake Park, Circle Pines, Fridley,
Mounds Viow and Now Brighton.'
'However, the reason for the recent County
Board action was to urgo rosidonts and
corporations to add their support through
voluntooring time, donating monetarily or making
in -kind contributions,' said Langteld.
Because the competition is open to all ages
and a wide variety of sports, expectations for a
rocord crowd aro high.' Commissioner Langfeld
commended furthor, in 1991 we had over 10,000
athletes compete and that number continues to
riso every yoar. We hope that our support of the
games will promote health and fitness as well as
bring our communilios loser together through the
spirit of competition.'
Registration for ovonts is taking place now.
competition, volunteering or contributions is
l(
ON ROAD NAMES REQUESTED
At an April 1, 1993, meeting of tho Road and Bridge Committee, one topic of discussion
was how to alleviate confusion associated with the namos of two collector streets serving
the City. Sunfish Lake Drive N.W. is a now east/wost cotloclor street which will eventually
run from T.H. 1147, south of 1491h Avenue N.W. to County Road 11116 near the Allron
Company. Portions of !his new street have boon constructed in the now Wood Pond Hills
and Sunny Ponds subdivisions located south of City Hall along County Road 115. Obviously
tho name Sunfish Lake Drive N.W. is very similar to Sunfish Lake Boulevard N.W. (C.R.
1157) which is also a major thoroughfare in the City. (See bold Linos on the map below to
show tho strools for renaming.)
A socond thoroughfare considered for renaming is 153rd/1551h Avenues. Because of the
irnportanco of this roadway, it would be less confusing for it to have a single descriptive name.
Tho Road and Bridgo Committee felt it would be worthwhile to obtain citizen input in
considoring appropriate namos for those two roadways. Possible namos could be related to
Ramsey's historic past, or to geographic or man-made featuros.
If you have a suggestion, please stop by, call us at 427-1410 or return the form below to
Ramsay Municipal Building, 15153 Nowthon Blvd N.W. Ramsay, MN 55303 by 5 p.m.
Friday, Juno 25, 1993. Tho Road and Bridge Commilleo will be reviowing these
suggostions and making a recommendation to the City Council in July.
If now road namos aro soloclod, the City will need to hold a public hearing and pass an
ordinance designating the change. Properties affocted by an addross change will be
notifiod by totter.
