R309.4 Motor Vehicle Turnouts. Where provided, a motor vehicle turnout shall have a <br />minimum paved area of 4.9 m (16 ft) wide minimum and 7.0 m (23 ft) long minimum <br />and shall connect to the clear space at the call box with a pedestrian access route <br />complying with R301. Where shoulder texturing is used, it shall be discontinued at the <br />turnout. <br />R309.5 Two -Way Communication. Where provided, two-way voice communication <br />shall comply with R309.5, and with sections 708.2 and 708.3 of Appendix D to 36 CFR <br />part 1191 (the ADA and ABA Accessibility Guidelines). <br />R309.5.1 Volume Controls. Volume controls complying with section 704.3 of <br />Appendix D to 36 CFR part 1191 (the ADA and ABA Accessibility Guidelines) <br />shall be provided. <br />R309.5.2 TTY. A TTY complying with section 704.4 of Appendix D to 36 CFR <br />part 1191 (the ADA and ABA Accessibility Guidelines) shall be provided. <br />CHAPTER R4: SUPPLEMENTARY TECHNICAL PROVISIONS <br />R401 Protruding Objects <br />R401.1 General. Protruding objects on sidewalks and other pedestrian circulation paths <br />shall comply with R401 and shall not reduce the clear width required for pedestrian <br />access routes. <br />Advisory R401.1 General. Banners, awnings, tree branches, sidewalk sculpture, and <br />temporary street or highway signs can become protruding objects if not placed or <br />maintained properly. <br />R401.2 Protrusion Limits. Objects with leading edges more than 685 mm (27 in) and <br />not more than 2 m (80 in) above the finish surface or ground shall protrude 100 mm (4 in) <br />maximum horizontally into the pedestrian circulation path. <br />R401.3 Post -Mounted Objects. Objects mounted on free-standing posts or pylons, 685 <br />mm (27 inches) minimum and 2030 mm (80 inches) maximum above the finish surface <br />or ground, shall overhang circulation paths 100 mm (4 inches) maximum beyond the post <br />or pylon base measured 150 mm (6 inches) minimum above the finish surface or ground. <br />Where a sign or other obstruction is mounted between posts or pylons and the clear <br />distance between the posts or pylons is greater than 305 mm (12 in), the lowest edge of <br />such sign or obstruction shall be 685 mm (27 in) maximum or 2 m (80 in) minimum <br />above the finish surface. <br />R401.4 Reduced Vertical Clearance.
