Aviation <br />Air transportation, both for passengers and cargo, plays <br />a key role in our economic competitiveness by <br />providing access to global markets and enhancing links <br />within and between businesses. In addition, the <br />aviation industry is a major industry in its own right, <br />employing large numbers of highly skilled workers. <br />The Minneapolis β€” St. Paul (MSP) Airport Long -Range <br />Plan, forecasts that air cargo operations and tonnage is <br />expected to increase at an average rate of 1.6 percent <br />between 2008 and 2030. <br />86,900 jobs <br />$2.5 billion in annual spending by visitors <br />$15.9 billion in total economic output annually <br />Role and Partners <br />Hennepin County's primarily role in aviation is to <br />provide transportation facilities for access to the <br />regional aviation facilities. <br />Key partners include the Federal Aviation <br />Administration (FAA), the Metropolitan Airports <br />Commission (MAC), the Minnesota Department of <br />Transportation (MnDOT), the Metropolitan Council, and <br />local municipalities. <br />Three Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC) <br />facilities, the Minneapolis β€”St. Paul International (MSP) <br />Airport, the Crystal Airport, and the Flying Cloud Airport <br />are located in Hennepin County (see Figure 4-09). <br />Minneapolis β€” St. Paul International (MSP) Airport <br />The Minneapolis -St. Paul International (MSP) Airport <br />serves as a commercial air service hub and provides <br />Twin Cities passengers with non-stop and direct service <br />to over 100 domestic destinations and over 10 <br />international markets. The MSP Airport is the 17th <br />busiest international airport in the United States. <br />Crystal Airport <br />Crystal Airport, located in the cities of Crystal, Brooklyn <br />Center and Brooklyn Park is a general aviation reliever <br />and the closest MAC airport to downtown Minneapolis. <br />Access to Crystal Airport is provided by Hennepin <br />County State Aid Highway (CSAH) 81/Bottineau <br />Boulevard, CSAH 10/Bass Lake Road and CSAH 8 (63rd <br />Avenue North. <br />Flying Cloud Airport <br />Flying Cloud Airport is a business jet reliever within the <br />MAC system, and is located approximately 14 miles <br />from downtown Minneapolis in the city of Eden Prairie. <br />Access to Flying Cloud Airport is provided by Hennepin <br />CSAH 61/Flying Cloud Drive, CSAH 1/Pioneer Trail and <br />CSAH 4/Spring Road. <br />Water Ports/Barges <br />There are currently no operating water ports in <br />Hennepin County since commercial navigation along <br />the stretch of the Mississippi River in the City of <br />Minneapolis ceased operation in late 2014. <br />32 <br />
