At approximately 9:00 am on November 8, 2018, the Ramsey Fire
Department was dispatched to a reported smell of gas inside a residential townhome in the 13900
block of Ironstone Terrace. Upon arrival,it was noted that the overhead garage door to the reported
unit was open along with all doors and windows to the home as well. The first responding fire
officer brought the 4-gas monitor inside the home and it immediately went in to alarm indicating
a high level of carbon monoxide in the home. Upon further investigation, multiple patients were
found on different levels inside the home. At this point Allina paramedics arrived and assisted
with removing patients from the home, all patients looked lethargic and some needed to be carried
outside. Additional fire crews arrived and shut the gas off to the home and evacuated adjoining
units. Lower levels of carbon monoxide were detected in the adjoining units. A total of 7 patients
were assessed on scene by Allina who determined all 7 were required to be sent to the hyperbaric
chamber at HCMC due to the high levels of carbon monoxide detected in their blood. This is a
rental unit and there were no carbon monoxide detectors in the home.
CenterPoint energy checked the home for gas leaks and/or malfunctioning appliances and all were
found to be in good working order. There was a vehicle parked in the garage, but was cool to the
touch and no keys in the ignition. Fire crews then opened the door to the vehicle to find high levels
of carbon monoxide inside the vehicle. Six of the seven patients were non-English speaking, with
one able to speak broken English. Further investigation results found that the homeowners had
been running the vehicle in the garage to keep the battery charged. It is unknown for what length
of time the vehicle was running, but was long enough to create a substantial amount of carbon
monoxide build up throughout the home.
