CC Regular Session
Meeting Date: 09/25/2018
Submitted For: Jo Thieling, Administrative Services
By: Jo Thieling, Administrative Services
4. 6.
Information
Title
Adopt Resolution #18-203 Proclaiming October 2018 Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Purpose/Background:
Purpose: To adopt a resolution showing the City of Ramsey's support in proclaiming Domestic Violence Awareness
Month.
Background: A request was received from Connie Moore, Executive Director of Alexandra House, to formally
recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. A request for Domestic Violence Awareness was also
received from the Purple Lights initiative. Each year, throughout Anoka Country, October is officially recognized
as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Counties and cities all over the United States take this opportunity to
honor this month through an official proclamation. In choosing to locally proclaim October as Domestic Violence
Awareness Month, the City of Ramsey shows its recognition of both the gravity of the problem and the importance
of the ongoing work to create a violence -free community in Anoka County. Council has adopted such resolution in
the past, and staff is requesting Council do so for 2018 as well. The proclamation will add to the chorus of voices
insisting that women, men, and children all have a right to seek peace and safety in their lives. This year, the City
will also be acting in partnership with the Purple Lights Initiative to light -up City Hall for the month of October in
recognition of domestic violence awareness.
A copy of Ramsey's proclamation will be forwarded to Ms. Moore and will be displayed at the Annual Walk for
Hope; Steps to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, which will be held on September 29th at Bunker Hills Regional
Park in Andover. The event, attended by over 500 participants every year, challenges communities to confront the
impact of domestic and sexual violence. Additionally, it provides a space for survivors, family members, friends,
and allies to honor those who have lost their lives as a result of domestic violence. Following the Walk for Hope,
the City's proclamation will be displayed at the Alexandra House.
Recommendation:
Staff recommends Council adopt the resolution proclaiming October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Action:
Motion to adopt Resolution #18-203 Proclaiming October 2018 Domestic Violence Awareness Month
Domestic Violence Awareness Resolution
Attachments
Form Review
Inbox Reviewed By Date
Kurt Ulrich Kurt Ulrich 09/20/2018 02:59 PM
Form Started By: Jo Thieling Started On: 09/18/2018 04:52 PM
Final Approval Date: 09/20/2018
