Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood stated the primary area is the playground. The playground
is in the sightline of the entrance to the park and the ball fields. He stated the coin could be
something you would carry or it could be implemented into a yearly celebration. This could be a
way to connect all of the parks.
Councilmember Cook stated he really liked this idea and commended the Parks Commission for
taking this idea further.
Commissioner Shryock had some safety concerns with the concrete curb for the play area. Ms.
Flannigan stated this was proposed as a style of curb and would have a rounded edge on it and
the blanket would cover part of the curb for safety.
Parks/Utilities Supervisor Riverblood discussed the budget for this project with the Council and
Commission. As proposed, $110,000.00 would be the approximate cost for the project.
Mayor Gamec stated he liked the idea and it would be nice to do it all at once but he thought they
should break this down in three phases to be bid this way. They could look at the figures better
that way.
Councilmember Kurak asked where the funds are coming from. Chairperson Johns stated
$80,000 of the funds will be coming from the park fund and they also set aside money from
Alpine Woods Development for this.
Councilmember Kurak stated they could get separate bids to see what the cost would be but she
would prefer they do this all at once. Councilmember Strommen disagreed with trying to phase
this because they would lose the entire concept of this park.
Chairperson Johns stated because they knew this project was coming on, they have been setting
money aside for the last couple of years for this. She stated she is not worried about having the
money for this.
Councilmember Cook thought the Commission preferred the City do this project all at once. Mr.
Olson stated there is $57,000 from Alpine Woods that could be used towards this.
Councilmember Pearson stated the largest price on the budget is for the wood structure. He
wondered how long this would last. Councilmember Cook stated with play equipment, they are
not looking at wearing out, it is the safety factor.
Ms. Flannigan stated they did look at play structures because of the recyclable portion for this.
The manufacturer suggests fifteen years for the play equipment.
Councilmember Zimmerman asked if they had anything like this at Rivers bend. Parks/Utilities
Supervisor Riverblood stated they do not.
Councilmember Strommen wondered if there might be grants for the education components for
funding and suggested looking into this because the school would be using this for learning.
Park and Recreation Commission/June 10,2004
Page 5 of 8
