Flanagan, Art · Landscape * Design <br />Submit-ced to Mark Boos, Parks & Utilities Supervisor, City of Ramsey <br />April 30, 2003 <br /> <br />Concept Design Phase <br /> <br /> Program <br /> <br /> Play area and natur~ interpretive garden at the eastern edge of Alpine Park <br /> <br />Overall layout addresses connections between the. play area, the greenway/bicycle path and the park <br />Garden include~ play equipment for young children as well as seating area for children and adults <br />Seating area also provides a place to stop and rest along the adjacent bicycle path <br /> <br />Garden is meant to inspire appreciation for and unders~nding of nature and of a human being's <br />relationship to the surrounding natural environment <br /> <br />Study materials created by Ramsay Elementary School for the school's Environmental.~.earning Area <br />(ELA) are referenced to interpret the Garden and for inspiration for thames and irrrager7 <br /> <br />Garden design reinforces and amplifies the content in the FLamsey ELA curriculum <br /> ? <br />Existing stands of oak and a~irgreens and the prairie and wettand habimt_s in this part of Alpine Park <br />are highlighted <br /> <br />Trees, shrubs and perennials that attract butterflies, insects and birds are added <br /> <br />Nearby landfill will be a part of the interpretive pr0gr-~n; funding will be sought to create a model to <br />depict or otherwise interpret how the landfill works or to incorporate'the subiecz of recycling <br /> <br />Public art especially for the garden will be created to support its interpretive function <br />Recycled and r~used materials and.sustainable principles will be emphasized in the construction of <br />the play area, garden and public art <br /> <br />Garden will comply with ADA Accessibility Standards <br /> <br />Timeframe for inst~llation is 2003, but is.flexible depending upon funding <br /> <br />$80,000 is available for design and construction from Park Dedication funds; <br />additional funds and materials may be ~ought through grants and donations to augment the project - <br /> <br />Additional criteria' no lighting is currently planned for the park but it may be possible for this <br />project4 seating area must be visible to passersby and police for purposes of public safet)d 'no <br />drinkdng fountain or irrigation is planned at this. time; temporary toilets are located nearby in <br />summer <br /> <br />Discovery Garden Concept Phase, Re§ina M.
