Chairperson Johns stated they do not necessarily want to recreate things that are already out
there.

Commissioner Lehman stated he would like to see a swimming area instead of a fishing area.

Commissioner LaMere stated with a fishing pond, there would be a lot of people in the area
because there are not a lot of people who take advantage of the Rum River but they may take the
kids to this area.

Commissioner Ostrum asked if it would be better in the open area.

Parks/Utilities Supervisor Boo stated the spaces are not that large and if there is a fishing area, it
would need to be deep and he thought in this area, they would need to buy fish and stock it and if
kids are messing around with fishing poles and gear, they would need to make this separate from
other areas.

Commissioner Ostrum stated they do not have anything for swimming at this point in the City, so
that should be the number one priority.

Chairperson Johns stated when she thought about this area, she thought of people coming in and
the Center could have a hotel there and people could enjoy the park.

Commissioner Ostrum stated he did not think it needed to be a commercial type of swimming
area, maybe a wading pool and in the winter, skate.

Parks/Utilities Supervisor Boos stated it would depend on if they could have an ice rink without a
cooling system because it will be in a city area where there is more heat generated.

Commissioner Shryock stated it would create a year round atmosphere if they could utilize this
year round.

Ms. Bartels stated this may be a better idea in the downtown area.

Commissioner Shryock stated she thought the downtown area would be more for gathering to eat
lunch and visit.

Chairperson Johns stated she would like to see picnic shelters that would accommodate the
companies for their picnics and then some smaller ones for smaller groups.

Chairperson Johns stated she would like to see an amphitheater but is it feasible and who would
pay for it.

Commissioner LaMere stated he would like to see it also.

Commissioner Lehman stated it would give the City some uniqueness.
Park and Recreation Commission/July 30, 2003
Page 4 of 11
