Councilmember Zimmerman agreed. <br /> <br />Councilmember Strommen stated that she does not want to lose green space in the development <br />either. <br /> <br />Councilmember Cook stated that if the main concern is getting the roads plowed along the <br />private drive that will be the responsibility of the homeowners association and if there is a need <br />to get a fire truck down the road and there is a stalled care they can pass on the curb if they need <br />to. He felt as if they were trying to make to many accommodations. <br /> <br />City Engineer Jankowski replied that streets are expected to function 365 days a year and there <br />are some times during the year when the street width shrinks because of snow or there could be <br />someone stuck in the street because of the snow and then the whole neighborhood is blocked in if <br />the street is to narrow. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig inquired as to what was wrong with 18 feet. He stated that they have been <br />talking about 16 feet and 20 feet, but there has been no discussion of 18 feet. He inquired if they <br />were to use the straight back curb and 18 foot width would that provide more flexibility. <br /> <br />Councilmember Strommen stated that she is questioning if they can get the number of homes <br />being proposed in the development and meet all of the standards. <br /> <br />Mr. Kangas stated that they would not ethically propose something that was not safe. <br /> <br />Councilmember Strommen replied that she would not be making the suggestion if there were <br />other options. <br /> <br />Councilmember Elvig inquired if they could agree with 18 feet. <br /> <br />Mr. Kangas replied that they would not be able to do so along the boulevard. <br /> <br />Councilmember Cook stated that the question is does the Council want quality development in <br />the City that will provide a different look or do they want to keep the road standards as they are <br />and keep all the developments the same. <br /> <br />Principal City Engineer Olson inquired as to why 18 feet does not work with a 60-foot fight of <br />way. <br /> <br />Mr. Kangas replied that he would have to look at the figures, but he thought they were at their <br />maximum at 16 feet. <br /> <br />Director of Public Works/Fire Chief Kapler stated that the one street staff felt that they could <br />negotiate on was the main street.
