CASE #

HIRING OF A POLICE PATROL OFFICER
By: David Gustafson, Police Chief

Background:

In 1999, the Federal Government awarded the City of Ramsey two police officer grants totaling
$150,000. One was filled in the last days of December 1999, only to be vacated in a few days
when the officer returned to his former department. Another officer was hired effective March
27, 2000, and remains with the Department.

The adopted 2000 budget provided sufficient funds for one additional officer for the entire year.
Hiring the second officer, effective October 1, 2000, would have no negative impact on the
personnel services portion of the adopted 2000 budget. Line items within the police budget
would accommodate uniforms and turnout gear as well as physical and psychological exams for
a second officer.

Recommendation:

Staff recommends hiring an additional Police Officer effective October 1, 2000.

Council Action:

Based upon discussion.

Reviewed by:

Police Chief
City Administrator
Human Resources Manager
Finance Officer

CC: 09/05/00

lIRA_FSI I VOL 1 lusers'lCiO, Shared FileiA GENDA COUNCIL & COMM1SSIONiCity Councill2OOOISeptember~IirePolice.doc 09/01/00

-15-
