CASE #

CONSIDER LIGHT POLE AND BANNER ARM SPECIFICATIONS
By: Brian E. Olson, AsSiStant Director of Public Works/Principal City Engineer

Background:

The Streetscape plan that was submitted: does not' include banners on the light poles
within the Ramsey ToWn Center brlt~Staff feels that we need to plan for the future
enhancement of the street~ ape plan to include the .ability to install banner arms and
banners on Sunwood Drive fi.om ArmStr0ngBoulevard to Ramsey Boulevard.

The Master Developer has agreed and, the light poles have been designed to
accommodate this request. Connexus ihas received a request and the money for the initial
order of 100 light poles and fixtures from ire Master Developer and want City approval
o£ the design of these banner~ before Placing the order.

There is a 8-12 week delivery time fol- these, fixtures and poles and Connexus would like
a decision soon so they can begin installing them as soon as possible this summer.

The poles are designed to accommodate wind loads for one 2 foot by 4 foot banner as
well as any street signs that may be neCessary. Included in this case is a detail showing
the options that we have available i for .future banner installation under the current
proposal. It is difficult to know exactly which configuration to choose until there is
further study of the content of the banners themselves, however, the intent of this case is
to provide for flexibility for the future :design of the banners.

Connexus has concerns regarding the .height of the banner arms from the sidewalk
elevation because of vandalism. TheYdo not think that the lower banner arms should be
any lower than 8.5 feet.

Staff feels that there will be considerable discussion on the deSign of the banners and is
recommending that ihere be two inserts (staff will have a display of the insert available
for the meeting) on the light poles on SUnwood Drive as well as one banner arm included
as hardware for each light pole. Any additional hardware that is necessary for the banner
installation will be a responsibility of the City when banners are ordered in the future.

Staff also recommends that the inserts be located at 8.5 feet and i2.5 feet as shown on the
attached drawing t° provide maximum flexibility for the future banner design.

45
