HOUSING CHARACTERISTICS <br />American Community Survey <br />The American Community Survey ("ACS") is an ongoing statistical survey administered by the <br />U.S. Census Bureau that is sent to approximately 3 million addresses annually. The survey gath- <br />ers data previously contained only in the long form of the Decennial Census. As a result, the <br />survey is ongoing and provides a more "up-to-date" portrait of demographic, economic, social, <br />and household characteristics every year, not just every ten years. The most recent ACS high- <br />lights data collected between 2013 and 2017. Tables HC-3 to HC-9 show key data for Ramsey. <br />Age of Housing Stock <br />The following graph shows the age distribution of the housing stock in 2017 based on data from <br />the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey (5-Year). Table HC-3 includes the number <br />of housing units built in Ramsey, prior to 1940 and during each decade since. <br />• As of 2017, the City of Ramsey was estimated to have 8,685 housing units, of which roughly <br />87% were owner -occupied and 13% were renter -occupied. In Anoka County, approxi- <br />mately 20% were renter -occupied while in the Seven -County Metro Area 32% of the hous- <br />ing stock was renter -occupied. <br />• Homes in Ramsey are newer than homes in Anoka County. Most housing (92%) were built <br />in the 1970's, 1980's, 1990's, and 2000's. The greatest number of homes in Ramsey were <br />constructed in the 1990's (roughly 26%). By comparison, the highest number of homes in <br />Anoka County were built in the 1980's (20%). <br />• Compared to Anoka County and the Metro Area, 29% of Ramsey's housing stock has been <br />built since 2000 compared to 19% of Anoka County, 16% of Metro Area. <br />MAXFIELD RESEARCH AND CONSULTING 51 <br />
