CITY COUNCIL WORK SESSION
Topic Report: Urban Village Tours
By: James E. Norman, CityAdminiStrator

Background:

In 2001, most City Councilmembers, staff, gnd community representatives attended a
tour of mixed use, transit oriented development in Chicago. Everyone in attendance
agreed that much was gained from the trip.

Recently, there have been discussions of the possibility of touring other sites in other
areas of the country, most notable areprojectg in the Phoenix, Arizona area, as well as in
the Los Angeles, California area. Staff diScUSsed the matter with the City Council during
a Work Session on March 15, :2005.1 The.Council directed staff to provide cost estimates
for review before further consideration..

. Attached to this topic repo. rt are costs by the i!adividual trips to Phoenix and Los Angeles.
Staff has also provided cost estimates for combining a trip to both Phoenix and Los
Angeles.

One other option mentioned during the March 15th Work Session is that those
Councilmembers interested gould attend a one day tour of an urban village in Easton,
Ohio. A one day trip could be accomplished for less than $100 per person. The
remaining option would be for staff to assemble a "virtual-tour" and plan an evening
around a description of different' Urban villages around the country.

Action Statement:

Based upon discussion.

Reviewed by:

City Administrator

CCWS: 03/22/05

-3-
