Mayor Gamec wondered:if it is time td have Bums and Ramsey be together as a combined fire department.i: Chief Kapler~ieplied that there are a lot of areas looking at that. Councilmember Pearson inquired if:there is any criteria as to how far apart your stations have to be. ChiefKapler rep~ed:.~at Ramsey based it strictly on distance. We tried to cover as much of the City in;a four-minute driving time as possible. Regarding a third station and Bums TOWnship, Chief Kapler stated that we would have to look at a longer term buy-in. He added that he, is rtot sure how to get our foot in the front door. Chair Anderson suggested having a task force developed that would study it. Mayor Gamec stated that we do need a third :~tat~on to the north. Chief Kapler stated that it is tough for Burns Township right: noW,: They have no equipment, no buildings - they are in the worst position for this distance. Chair~ Anderson inquired what the rating is in Burns to which Chief Kapler replied. 10 -:~hich is the highest you can go. 6) Fire Calls in Bums: Upon inquirY, Chief;Kapler stated that the Ramsey Fire Department covers from the 7200 block to the Bums western border which is half of Bums. Ramsey responded 26 times in 2004 and there were many more calls in the eastern side which Oak Grove covers. Ramsey was there about 60 times. The contract is in place until October of next year. TheY seem '_to §e happy with the service they are getting. Councilmember Pearson inquired if Burns has talked about starting their own Fire Department. Chief Kapler stated th67 want to set some money aside for something. Chair Anderson suggested:it might be ~o~_~hwhile to start talking about all this and added that Burns will never be able to affordth~e same kind of service and expertise they are now receiving - it's just not possible. Mayor Gamec asked if there is any benefit to Ramsey. Chief Kapler~ replied there ~Vould be shared cost and shared people. Boardmember Riddle inquired what the timeframe is to which Chief Kapler replied he would like to have land aCquired by:the eni:l of 2005. Also, we are talking about moving the City Hall/Police Complex into the Town Center area which leaves this piece of land. Now what do we do with;the fire Station :~down here. We may have to look at another one. He sees the proper Order as' doing something in our current area first - the priority is to make something hapPen here. Mayo~r Gamec stated that concerns him because all the emphasis has been on the munic!pal building and the Police facility. All of a sudden, we have a Fire Department here and We might sell the property. We are then without a station here. We neglected to look at that~financially. We could be in a reactive versus proactive situation and that's aconcem. Chair Anderson stated that it's not cost effective to run a Fire Department out of this °Id City Hall and inquired if it would be easier to make the newer building i(PD) int° a fir6 station.
