sl
20-01 Variolite Street Reconstruction
Ramsey, Minnesota
NTI Project No. 19. MSP09109.000
SCOPE OF SERVICES
Sixty-one (61) borings were performed for the project. The scope of services included determining
existing bituminous and aggregate base thicknesses, groundwater levels, subsurface conditions, and
providing recommendations for site preparation, excavations, engineered fill and compaction, depths of
unsuitable soils to be removed, groundwater management, potential difficulties during construction,
utility construction, and estimated soil support parameters (R-values) for pavement design.
PROJECT AND SITE DESCRIPTION
The street improvements include reconstruction of existing bituminous streets and the installation of
public utilities. The project area includes approximately 2.25 miles of roadway along Variolite Street
Northwest and 161st Avenue Northwest in Ramsey, Minnesota.
NTI was not aware of invert elevations or other design details of the proposed utilities at the time this
report was prepared.
SUBSURFACE EXPLORATION SUMMARY
NTI performed the subsurface exploration program during the period of September 23 through 26, 2019
with two -person crews using a truck -mounted CME-55 drill rig and an ATV -mounted CME-750 drill rig.
Samples were generally collected in accordance with ASTM D 1586 "Standard Test Method for Standard
Penetration Testing (SPT) and Split -Barrel Sampling of Soils." Pavement cores were obtained at each
boring location.
The boring locations and depths were determined by a representative of the City of Ramsey and were
marked in the field by NTI. The borings terminated at depths ranging from approximately 10.5 to 18.5
feet below the top of pavement. Due to soft / very loose soil conditions at the termination depth of
Borings SB-9, SB-15, and SB-39, these borings were extended to depths ranging from approximately 13.0
to 18.5 feet below the top of pavement.
NTI located the borings relative to existing site features and subsequent to drilling operations
determined the approximate elevation, latitude and longitude of the borings using a handheld Trimble
GeoXH 6000 GPS unit (Anoka County datum). Boring elevations, latitude, and longitude should be
considered to be approximate.
Please refer to the Boring Location Diagrams and the Boring Logs in Appendix C, and the Pavement Core
Photographs in Appendix D.
