From: Gene Cherrico
To: Meetings Inbox
Subject: Questons/Concerns Ref Re -do of Variolite
Date: Sunday, April 12, 2020 2:35:51 PM
On Friday 4-10 I saw / talked to men staking along the backside of my property so I had a short
discussion with them of the plans to repave Variolite St NW and how if affected my back yard. I looked at
next weeks agenda so I have some questions/comments about plan for the pending work.
To set the stage I live on the southeast corner of Variolite and 161 st.
1- In a nut shell of my conversation with the workmen these are some of their comments and my
comment to each. They said Variolite was to be widened (next weeks agenda said it was to be reduced
from 40 to 34 feet).
Is Variolite being widened or reduced? They were staking the easement about 3 feet + into the corner of
the lot that I live on so a couple of issues:
A -I will have to move my sprinkler system (at my cost???)
B-Will the area to be dug up be marked so I can have my sprinkler system moved on time prior to digging
A clarification of the any widening or reducing of Variolite it SHOULD all be done on the WEST/NORTH
side of Variolite where there are no housing developments. I live in the Lennar Woodlands and any
expansion of Variolite in our direction brings the road closer to our homes.
We already have issues with the loudness of all the vehicles on Variolite with truck traffic (that in your
reports of the re -paving states "heavy truck use". The work should be on the opposite side of the street to
somewhat reduce the noise as well as a safety issue move the traffic farther from the housing and the
current walk path. Also it is not only the trucks noises the vehicle traffic is a concern also. In the proposal
it is stated reducing the speed limit of 45 to 40 from Alpine to 163rd, well a whole lot of traffic is doing 55+
on this road and faster they go the louder it gets.
MAYBE noise buffer of trees should be installed along Varilotite??9??
Buffer brings up another issue, where the workers put in markers they said I and others would lose some
trees, well with the high noise/traffic issues on the corner/back of my property our trees help especially in
the summer when the trees are in full leafing, removing any trees will increase the noise volume.
The proposal for pedestrian islands at 161 and Variolite bring up other issues:
Going SOUTH between161 and 163 is a road level change that at the stop signs on 161 you have to be
extremely careful driving or crossing the intersection due the the level change and south bound traffic at
50-+ mph
Putting in islands make it increasing difficult for trucks, delivery vehicles, recreation and hauled trailers to
make turns that will force them to drive over the islands or already driving over my yard when making the
turns. (Often feel like I should put a boulder on the corner of my lot to deter the close turns. (there is an
island with flowers/plants on 161 st and Uranimite that also hinders turning radius's )
Net of all this is 1- why expand road closer to where the house and walking trail are located vs the north
west side where no housing is close to the road the path has large number of bike and pedestrian traffic
that is exposed. 2- need to move my sprinkler system, 3- issues with the 161 Variolite intersection with or
without ped islands, 4- Issue with turn radius of vehicles at the 161/Variolite intersection 4- Truck/high
speed vehilce noises on Variolite and need for the trees to remain as somewhat of a noise barrier -5-
Speed like needs to be 35 (they go to darn fast on 161.
