84
A Complete Streets approach to planning and implementing non -motorized facilities, as described
in the MnDOT Complete Streets Implementation Resource Guide, can provide a helpful framework
for creating a community -supported, safe, comfortable, and convenient transportation network that
serves all modes. A Complete Streets policy or process is intended to provide design guidance and
implementation clarity, allowing the community and project designers to advance individual
projects in a collaborative and cost-efficient manner.
Accessibility is a very important consideration for non -motorized design. All new pedestrian and
bicycle facilities must meet the ADA accessibility guidelines established in PROWAG. The guidelines
in PROWAG address the design needs of people with physical and/or visual impairments.
Accessibility will become increasingly important over the next 20 years due to demographic
changes. Baby boomers are aging and the population over age 65 is increasing. People over 65 are
more likely to have physical and/or visual impairments that affect their ability to get around.
Off-street Facility
Source: www.peddikeimages org /Laura Sandi
Protected Bikeway
Source: NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide
Buffered Bicycle Lane
Source. wwwpednfkefmages_o g/LyubovZuyeve
city of RAMSEY
Conventional Bicycle Lane
Source: www.pednikeirnages.org / Jennifer Corrpan
Bicycle Boulevard
Source: NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide
Wide Paved Shoulder
Source. www pedbikeimagesorg / Laura Sandt
Comprehensive Plan 2040
