CITY OF ANOKA SWIMMING POOL FUNDING REQUEST
By: Mark Boos, Parks/Utilities Supervisor

Background:

As was the case last year at this time, the City received a request to appropriate $12,000 over the
next three years to purchase resident rates at the Aquatic Center in Anoka for Ramsey pool-
goers. Last year the City contributed $4,000 for the year 2001. There was however, discussion
on re-evaluating the issue the next time.

On November 15th, 2001 the Park and Recreation Commission reviewed the request from Anoka.
The Commission noted that the "savings" to residents appeared to be better than years past,
adding that it had been an approximate "break-even" previously. The Commission discussed a
number of ways to respond, noting that generally the usual funding sources they have
recommending authority over are reserved for capital improvements, rather than programming.

Observations:

The Commission recommended not purchasing resident status at Anoka's Aquatic Center - and
reviewing the participation data for the coming year to see if there was any perceptible decline in
Ramsey pool users by not having preferred rates.

Attached is the referenced letter from the City of Anoka.

Finance Committee Action:

Based upon discussion.

Reviewed by:

Park and Recreation Commission
Parks/Utilities Supervisor
Director of Public Works
Finance Officer

FC: 11/27/01
